the in-between
by Ramona Garcia

a woman solicited

the universe for

signs.

scoured people

books, churches, old memories.

She met no answers,

it was all dead air.

yet, one evening

her companion wandered

into the woods

a stop every foot.

the companion

was not plagued with confusion.

the companion

believed each leaf

scent, patch of sunlight

deserved attention.

the companion

already belonged

to the surroundings.

the woman then understood

the pursuit

of somewhere else

will not reward you with rest.

it is the

in-between.

some time later,

if one were to ask,

“When did your life change?”

oh, she wouldn’t have to think

much.

For it was not tangible

nor spectacular.

“the when is easy,”

she would blush.

“it comes as a whisper,

a painted memory.

ordinary to some.

but, for you,

it is the first time

you do not outrun.

you choose

to walk beside

and live a life

with the being that loves

you dearly

exactly as you are.

well,

That is the moment

The rest of you begins.”
